Simply because we do not understand what is being sung, this never means that you should avoid listening to music in a foreign language because the truth is that the music can often be good enough on its own. Given that Spanish speaking music is so popular right now, we have been indulging a great deal more in Spanish and we are going to share with you some of our favorite artists, from now and in the past, who you could tune into and get inspired by, dance to and be entertained by, let’s take a look.
Shakira
Many will know Shakira of course for her English singing but what many don’t realize about the younger version of the singer, was that she was a real rock chick. Shakira’s earlier work is seriously good fun and makes for a great listen. As music writer Rose Burillo has pointed out, even the hit album Laundry Service sounds better in her native tongue, and we absolutely love how raw her voice sounds when singing in Spanish.
Soda Stereo
Argentinian rock really blew up in the mid-to-late 80s and at the heart of that was Soda Stereo, a truly magnificent indy rock band who inspired so many more bands from Argentina and beyond. When we look at that cultural rock explosion that took place, it was very much lead by singer Gustavo Cerati, who was one of the finest singers and guitarists of his generation, and who is widely respected around the world.
Jose Jose
Name the ‘Prince of the Song’ Jose Jose had one of the most iconic voices that you will ever hear, and even now on YouTube it has become customary for vocal coaches to rate his live performances, such was the power he had. The album Romanticos is a great introduction to the sound that this man had, and even if you are not able to understand what he is saying, I can assure you that you will certainly be blown away by the sheer power of his voice.
Jarabe de Palo
Jarabe de Palo hit the scene with one of the most famous songs in the Spanish speaking world ‘La Flaca’. They proved to be way more than a one hit wonder however and the band continued to bring out fun, soft rock which is the perfect option for so many different occasions. Sadly the lead singer of the band lost his life last year, which has brought about a new generation of fans.
Luis Miguel
And finally we have Luis Miguel or El Sol as he is known in Mexico, one of the finest singers of the last 50 years and a man who sings in English as well as Spanish. Luis Miguel even snag for Frank Sinatra at his birthday bash some years ago, such is the respect that other singers have for him. Luis Miguel has had a long and successful career and that means that there is literally hundreds of hours of music which you can find and enjoy.
