The safest place to store a bike is inside a residence. A studio or one-bedroom apartment may have limited space for keeping a bike safely out of the way while ensuring easy access. Whether you are considering a city bike for sale to change up your commute, comparing the features of electric bicycles or looking for a new way to store your current ride in a dwelling with limited space, here are eight bike storage tips.
1. Make a Plan Based on Bike Dimensions
Allot an area about six feet long, three-and-a-half feet tall and just under two feet wide for a single adult bike. A bike will take up this amount of space on the floor or on a wall or ceiling where it is mounted.
2. Use a Floor Stand if Space Allows
A floor stand keeps a bike upright without the use of a kickstand, reducing wear on parts that may occur when a manual or electric bicycle for men or women is stored without sufficient support. Most floor stands are portable and can be used indoors and outdoors. Some stands support a bike at convenient points for maintenance.
3. Try a Gravity Stand
A gravity stand or storage rack gets one or two bikes up off of the floor and rely on the weight for stability. Some racks do not require drilling into walls during installation, while other designs can be secured with a drywall screw for more stability. Rubber bumpers protect surrounding floors and walls.
4. Install a Wall Mounting System
Mount a bike in a location with sufficient support. There are many mounting methods, from heavy-duty bicycle hooks to wall racks or track systems. Strong pegs mounted at the right points to support the frame or wheels can also be used to suspend a bike. Some systems have built-in cabinets or shelves for cycling gear.
5. Maximize Width With a Vertical Mount
Mounting a bike on the wall vertically by a single wheel can maximize the amount of width you have. This method takes up more depth but can be effective for storing multiple bikes.
6. Dedicate a Wall to a Horizontal Mount
Show off the full length of a bike with a horizontal wall mount. Some horizontal mounts fold, swivel or retract to allow you to adjust the position of a mounted bike.
7. Mount a Bike on the Ceiling
There are several hanging systems designed for mounting one or more bikes on a ceiling. The height of the ceiling in an apartment will determine whether this is a practical storage solution. It may also be possible to install a ceiling-mounted pulley, hoist or electric lift system for easy access. Make sure building materials can support the weight of a bike.
8. Consider External Storage Solutions
These tips should make storing a bike in small living quarters easier. Minimize the footprint of a bike with a mounting solution.
