How To Change Headlights in a Ford Mustang

There are some little jobs that all car owners should know how to do. These simple, small tasks may be required at some point in your life if you regularly drive a vehicle. If you own a Ford Mustang, it’s important to learn how to do some of these basic jobs so you can avoid spending thousands of dollars at the repair shop. The most important do-it-yourself car jobs include VIN lookup free, changing your oil, replacing the spark plugs and checking your battery. Another easy and essential DIY job is changing a headlight. Here is how you change a headlight in your Ford Mustang.

Headlight Situations

Driving without a headlight is something that can get you pulled over. If a police officer spots a driver on the road at night missing one or both lights, they can pull you over and order you to get the light repaired. In that situation, you’ll have to add the extra step of getting your car signed off by an official or a state-sanctioned repair shop to remove the potential violation from your record. It’s a better idea to simply replace the headlight as soon as you notice a potential problem, such as dimming or when it first goes out.

Tools

The other thing to know when learning how to change a headlight is what supplies you need to complete the job. If the light is burned out you can change either the bulb or the entire headlight. You’ll need to purchase the right product that fits the Ford Mustang. You’ll also need a few common tools to complete the job. You’ll need a flat head screwdriver, a Phillips head screwdriver and a 10mm socket.

Process

The first step to replace headlights is opening the hood. Then, remove the radiator cover, the grille assembly and the screws that hold in the bumper. You’ll have to do this on the passenger side and the driver side to loosen the area enough to install a new headlight. Essentially, you want to loosen the bumper enough so you can remove it and get to the electronic components underneath where each headlight is housed.

Light Replacement

Once the bumper has been removed, you can easily get into the area where the headlight can be taken off. You’ll need to disconnect the bulb connector and remove the headlight. For a complete headlight replacement, simply swap out the old component with a brand new one that fits your Fort Mustang.

Bulb Replacement

If you just need to replace a burned out bulb, you’ll access the interior parts of the headlight and swap out the old bulb for a new one. Cleaning the ballast area with rubbing alcohol is a good idea to keep the headlights from looking foggy or dull when you drive. Then, slide the repaired headlight back into place and tighten the bolts around it to make it secure. Replace all of the components of your Mustang, such as the grille, radiator cover and bumper before completing the job.

Fix It Yourself

Having the knowledge and skill to fix a headlight yourself is a useful way to save money and be more self-sufficient. Learn how to change a headlight in your Ford Mustang and feel a sense of pride.
